Bayes Boat Rental

Homer, Alaska

Be Your Own Captain

Explore the Last Frontier in style! With a quality vessel from Bayes Boat Rental, YOU become the Captain.

Our rental options allow nearly infinite choice and flexibility in the planning of your Alaskan vacation.

Whether you're an Alaskan looking for a freezer full of halibut, or a visitor looking to explore the state, our dependable boats are ready and willing to take you on your next adventure!

Each vessel is moored in a permanent slip at the Homer Harbor, which eliminates the hassles and expenses of towing and launching yourself.

Each rental comes standard with an in-person Safety and Equipment Orientation, required safety and navigation equipment, and fishing gear (rods, reels, downriggers, and sinkers).

We offer two boats to choose from:
>> 24' Raider Coastal 2484 “McGray"
>> 24' Bayweld “Gondola"

Drawing upon a lifetime of experience fishing the waters out of Homer, owner and local charter Captain David Bayes and his team have outfitted each vessel with everything needed for a successful trip on the water.

Simply show up with any preferred tackle, bait, and personal items, then step aboard our FULLY EQUIPPED platform and become your own captain.

Because our vessels are rigged, ready, and permanently berthed in the water, we have even converted many seasoned Alaskan boat owners to using our rental setups instead of their own!

Importantly, Bayes Boat Rental recommends ALL renters receive a Boater's Education certificate. This free course may be taken online at: boatus.org/alaska

No certificate? Do you have experience captaining a vessel on Alaskan saltwater? If yes, then please CALL TO BOOK and we can arrange your rental over the phone.

Again, Bayes Boat Rental recommends ALL renters complete a Boater's Education course. This free certificate may be earned online at: boatus.org/alaska

Refunds

Full refunds given if trip is cancelled with 2 weeks notice.

Full refunds given if vessel is unable to leave port due to weather (i.e. Small Craft Advisory in effect for Kachemak Bay) or for mechanical issues.

No shows and last minute cancellations will result in a full-fare charge.

Requirements

Person renting and operating the vessel must be at least 25 years of age and possess a valid driver's license.

Person renting and operating the vessel must sign an affidavit which attests to their having extensive experience operating a power vessel upon Kachemak Bay, or Cook Inlet, OR that they have successfully completed a boater education course.

Fuel is the responsibility of the Renter. The Renter shall be charged the actual price of fuel, as well as a $40 convenience fee, should the vessel be returned without a full fuel tank.

The Renter and all passengers are required to sign a Rental Agreement and Waiver of Liability before they will be allowed aboard the vessel.

The Vessel may be used between 5:30AM and 5:30PM each day of the rental.

Vessels reserved on multi-day rentals are not required to return to the Homer Harbor each night, BUT they also may not be in use, on the fishing grounds, or slept aboard between 5:30PM and 5:30AM.

If the vessel will not be returned to the Harbor each night, prior approval from Bayes Boat Rental is required.

A Vessel Orientation (no charge) is required and is done the evening before the rental. Renters who miss their scheduled orientation will not be able to use the Vessel and will lose their deposit.

Vessel may not be beached, or operated in areas which become unnavigable at low tide.

Bayes Boat Rental reserves the right to refuse rental to any party or individual.

Vessel Capacity and Operating Range

The boats are ideally suited to groups of six or less. Vessel performance and “fishability” decreases with more than 4 adults.

The operating range, for operators with previous experience operating a vessel on Kachemak Bay or Cook Inlet, is within a 25 mile radius of the Homer Harbor. The Southern limit of this range is the North end of Flat Island. The Northern limit of the range is Anchor Point.

Trip Planning

What to Bring

If Planning to fish, everyone in your party who is 16 or older will require a State of Alaska Fishing License. Licenses are available locally, or online at: admin.adfg.state.ak.us/license

Camera (extra memory / batteries / waterproof case)

Waterproof rubber-soled footwear (leather-soled shoes and cowboy boots have VERY poor traction on a wet deck)

Warm, layered clothing

Rain gear

Lunch / snacks / drinks

What to Wear

It is very important to dress in layers with a waterproof outer layer. Warm gloves and a hat are recommended.

Summer conditions range from highs of sunny and 70 degrees down to rain, wind, and 45 degrees. All the layers in the world are useless if they get wet, so be sure to bring waterproof pants and coat. Even if cheap and disposable, some form of rain gear will block most wind and rain.

Motion Sickness

If you think you might be prone to motion sickness, or have never ventured on the ocean before, be sure to take preventative measures! Motion sickness has ruined the day for many a boater.

Speak with your doctor about a prescription for the Scopolamine patch. Many boaters have far better results with this patch than with Dramamine or Bonine. For best results, place your patch behind your ear the night before the trip.

Scopolamine Patch: goodrx.com/scopolamine

Dramamine and Bonine – Neither of these medications take effect quickly. They WILL NOT WORK if you take them after you've already begun to feel sick. For best results, take one pill the night before the trip and one the morning of your trip. (Consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking any dose not specified by the manufacturer).

Fish Processing

Fish filleting facilities are available for personal use free-of-charge at the Harbor.

If you wish to have your fish vacuum packaged, frozen, smoked, or shipped, then contact either of the following companies and ask for a free fish pick-up.

Coal Point Seafoods: welovefish.com

Homer Fish Processing: homerfishprocessing.com

Shipping fish home is costly. Many choose to pack lightly or bring along clothes which are disposable in order to leave more room for checking fish as baggage on the way home.

Styrofoam-lined fish boxes are available locally for shipping your fish. These boxes will keep fish frozen up to 24 hours. Alaska Airlines has freezers in some airports to store your fish box, should your flight be delayed. Check with your airline ahead of time to see if freezer space will be available.
